1.
Summary:
Many of the ideas for integrating technology into service learning revolved
around creating a website or blog discussing the project. This is a site I have used for several years
to create my own personal blog. This web
service is a blogging site where you can create and manage your own blog. Powered by google, this site requires a
google account to post, however posting is simple once you are set up. All students could post to one blog with the
teacher set up as the admin on the blog.
Your blog will be found at (blog
name).blogspot.com. It also allows
for students to comment on each other’s posts.
There are privacy settings on the blog also so that only those you want
to view the blog can view it. This
should ease any uneasiness about posting student’s work to the internet.
2. Strengths
a.
Free service powered through google, which
provides many other educational resources.
b.
All students can post to one blog instead of all
having their own. All work would be in
one place.
c.
Privacy settings allow for the blog created to
be viewed only by those you want to give access to.
d.
Blogging interface is very comparable to
standard word processors like Word.
3. Weaknesses
a.
Prior to starting your blog, a google account
would need to be created for each student which could be quite time-consuming.
b.
Parents may be skeptical in allowing their
students to have a google account complete with e-mail address and have their
work on something that is usually used for public use.
4.
Who is
this useful for? This site would be
useful for all any class wanting to start a class blog. It may be something that would be more
appropriate for middle to high school though since it is not necessarily a service
used exclusively for educational purposes.
As with many google products, it is fairly easy to use.
5.
What is
needed to use it? In order to use
this site, you need to have a google account and something to write about. No fees required.
